A supplement label can look scientific while still leaving the most important question unanswered: does the specification on the front of the pack actually tell you what the product is likely to do? Tribulus is a good example. You may see 500 mg, 1,000 mg, “extract,” “standardized,” or a percentage of saponins. Those numbers are useful—but they describe different things, and none of them automatically proves a better outcome.
This matters for Exforzym because the current Zyma product information lists Tribulus terrestris 1,000 mg. That is the product fact we can confidently work from. A previous version of this Journal article treated a 40% saponin statement as though it were part of the current Exforzym specification. The current product data we reviewed does not support using that percentage as an Exforzym claim, so this guide has been rebuilt around what the label can genuinely tell you.
Start with what the label actually says
When you read any botanical supplement, separate four different pieces of information: the plant name, the amount, the preparation, and any standardization claim. For Tribulus, the plant name is Tribulus terrestris. The amount might be expressed in milligrams. The preparation could be whole-herb powder or an extract. A standardization statement might name a marker compound—often a group such as saponins—and give a percentage.
These fields are not interchangeable. “1,000 mg Tribulus” is an amount statement. “40% saponins” would be a composition statement. “10:1 extract” would describe processing concentration. None of those alone tells you that one product has better human outcomes than another.
The first rule is therefore simple: do not turn a manufacturing specification into a clinical promise. The more impressive the number looks, the more important it is to ask what the number actually measures.
Milligrams and percentages answer different questions
A milligram amount tells you how much of the listed material is present in the stated serving. A percentage tells you how much of that material is represented by a measured constituent or marker. If a hypothetical extract contained 1,000 mg and was genuinely standardized to 40% of a named marker, the arithmetic would imply 400 mg of that marker group. But that calculation only becomes meaningful when the label clearly confirms both the extract amount and the standardization.
There is another important distinction: a marker is not automatically the single “active ingredient.” Botanical extracts contain many compounds. Manufacturers often choose markers because they can be measured reliably and can help maintain batch-to-batch consistency. That is useful for quality control, but biology is more complicated than a single percentage.
This is why comparing two Tribulus supplements only by the largest milligram number or the largest saponin percentage can be misleading. One number describes quantity. Another may describe composition. Neither replaces evidence from actual human use.
What standardization can and cannot tell you
The U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements explains that standardization is commonly used to control the amount of selected chemical constituents in a botanical preparation. In practical terms, it can help a manufacturer aim for a more consistent material from batch to batch.
That is a legitimate quality concept. It does not mean that a standardized extract has been proven more effective, more potent in a clinically meaningful way, or safer than every non-standardized alternative. It also does not mean that the marker selected for standardization is responsible for all of the plant’s biological effects.
Think of standardization as an answer to the question, “Can we describe and reproduce part of what is in this extract?” It is not automatically an answer to, “Will this improve my outcome?”
That second question belongs to controlled human research, and the answer depends on the exact population, dose, preparation, duration and outcome being measured.
Why human evidence matters more than a marker
Tribulus has a much bigger reputation than its human evidence base. It is frequently marketed around testosterone, masculinity, training and sexual wellness, but those are separate claims and they should not be bundled together.
A recent systematic review of human studies found that most included studies did not show a meaningful increase in androgen measures such as testosterone. Some trials reported signals related to sexual-function outcomes, but the evidence was limited and heterogeneous. That means it is not responsible to treat “Tribulus” as shorthand for “raises testosterone.”
This is exactly why label literacy matters. A high percentage of saponins cannot rescue a claim that human trials do not convincingly support. If the desired outcome is hormonal, look at hormonal evidence. If the desired outcome is general men’s wellness or sexual wellbeing, examine those outcomes separately. The biological question comes first; the marketing category comes second.
How this applies to Exforzym
The current Exforzym information on Zyma lists Tribulus terrestris 1,000 mg, with a suggested use of one tablet daily with the main meal. It is positioned in men’s wellness—not as a hormone medicine and not as a treatment for a diagnosed medical condition.
That positioning should shape expectations. The useful way to read the 1,000 mg figure is as a transparent formula fact: this is how much Tribulus the current product listing declares. It should not be translated into “1,000 mg means 1,000 mg of saponins,” “more milligrams means more testosterone,” or “a larger dose guarantees a stronger result.” Those statements would go beyond what the label and the evidence support.
If a future pack or official product specification includes an extract ratio or a standardized marker percentage, that information should be interpreted as an additional description of the material—not as a replacement for clinical evidence.

The practical checklist
When comparing Tribulus products, use this sequence instead of chasing the biggest number:
- Confirm the exact botanical. Look for Tribulus terrestris, not a vague “herbal blend.”
- Find the serving basis. Is the stated amount per tablet, per capsule, or per multi-unit serving?
- Separate herb amount from extract markers. Milligrams and percentages answer different questions.
- Look for standardization only as a quality descriptor. Do not assume it proves better outcomes.
- Match evidence to the claim you care about. Testosterone, libido, exercise performance and general wellbeing are not the same endpoint.
- Check the whole routine. Sleep, nutrition, activity, stress and medication use can matter more than a single botanical.
- Avoid using a supplement to self-treat persistent symptoms. If you have ongoing sexual, hormonal or energy concerns, a clinician can help identify causes that a supplement label cannot.
The stronger standard is not “the product with the most aggressive claim.” It is the product whose label you can understand, whose role is clear, and whose expectations stay inside the evidence.
